Anderson
President's Distinguished Service Award
Amber Anderson, Online and Adult Learning, Academic Affairs
What do you think is your most significant contribution, accomplishment or achievement
at 蹤獲扦?
I've had the opportunity to be part of efforts that improved enrollment processes,
supported student retention, and contributed to a more meaningful student experience.
My work has focused on developing thoughtful support systems and using data to guide
decisions all with the goal of building a more inclusive and responsive environment
for our Online & Adult Learners.
Why are you proud to be a Shocker?
I'm proud to be a Shocker! Not only did I graduate three times from 蹤獲扦,
I'm also about to hit the 10-year mark working with our Online & Adult learners. As
a first-generation college student, it means so much to me to help guide others through
the higher education journey, just like the incredible faculty and staff who shaped
me along the way.
What's the greatest piece of advice a colleague or mentor has given you?
Even when you don't have all the answers or feel unsure, just showing up makes all
the difference. Showing up for your team, your peers, and yourself, even on the tough
days, is a huge part of success. It's those small, consistent actions that add up
and create real impact.
What technological innovations have made the most impact on your life? Explain how
or why.
The technological innovations that have made the most impact on my life are the rise
of online learning platforms and online programs. As someone who works closely with
adult learners, the ability to connect, learn, and collaborate virtually has been
a game-changer. Many of our students have expressed deep gratitude for our online
programs without them, they wouldn't be able to finish their degrees. It's opened
up education to so many who might not have had access otherwise.
What practical skills do you wish you had?
More active listening.
What is the most important skill every person should have?
Integrity.
What qualities do you admire in others?
I admire qualities such as empathy, integrity, and humility in others. I'm drawn to
individuals who lead with kindness, listen with intention, and remain grounded in
their values especially when it's difficult to do so.
If you could have a super human power, what would it be?
Instant teleportation. I don't want to drive.
If you have one opportunity to travel in time, where would you go and what would you
do?
I would remain in the physical present. I've seen the past and look forward to what
the future holds.
Describe yourself in three words.
Collaborative, analytical, and compassionate
What is one item on your bucket list?
I don't have a bucket list, my most memorable experiences aren't tied to grand adventures,
but to the time I spend with my closest friends and family. We have a way of turning
even the most ordinary moments into something unforgettable.
What (or who) inspires you?
Answer
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Why?
Barbie, with a doctorate.
What piece of advice would you give to your 21-year-old self?
Worry less. Have more fun. Some of the most meaningful growth comes from moments of
lightness, exploration, and joy. There is wisdom in allowing yourself to be present,
to take risks, and to find balance between striving and simply being.

at 蹤獲扦?
Served as department chair, faculty senate president, and founded the Academic Center

What's the greatest piece of advice a colleague or mentor has given you?
Go ahead and be stubborn. Intelligently.
What technological innovations have made the most impact on your life? Explain how
or why.
I grew up without an internet, or even a word processor. It's ridiculously easy to
get information now instead of working for it or just wondering. We can search texts
to find that passage we almost remember, look up references, and even do wild things like tell a word processor
to number pages for us. Sweet. Let's hope we don't blow it now.
What practical skills do you wish you had?
Oh, so many. I can't bake bread. I'm terrible at benchwork. Maybe they'll have brain
implants for that. Should we hope?
What is the most important skill every person should have?
Emotional intelligence.
What qualities do you admire in others?
Kindness, patience, and helpfulness.
If you could have a super human power, what would it be?
Just one? Slow mo: physically everything slows, to give people time to rethink what
they're doing.
If you have one opportunity to travel in time, where would you go and what would you
do?
I'm really tempted to try to find that pivotal moment when we could fix things, but
I don't think there is one. We just keep unfixing things. Maybe I'd just take a peek
at the future to see if we're still here.
Describe yourself in three words.
Obstinate, reflective, pessimistic
What is one item on your bucket list?
Finish the book.
What (or who) inspires you?
My colleagues and students here at 蹤獲扦. I know that's an eye-roller. We're supposed

Cockrell
President's Distinguished Service Award
Stephanie Cockrell, Graduate Programs in Business, W. Frank Barton School of Business
What do you think is your most significant contribution, accomplishment or achievement
at 蹤獲扦?
I'm not sure there's one single contribution that defines my time at 蹤獲扦, but I'm
especially proud of assisting in the relaunch of the Executive MBA Program for the
Barton School. This program had a strong history at 蹤獲扦, and bringing it
back was an opportunity to create something modern, relevant, and connected to our
business community. It's been incredibly rewarding to recruit talented leaders from
across Kansas and Oklahoma and to build a program that gives them the tools and network
to grow their careers and their companies. The success of the EMBA helped open the
door for new graduate student opportunities, including launching the MBA case competition
team that competed at Baylor University in the Fall.
I'm also proud of my work in First-Year programs post-COVID and my time as a Success Coach. Both roles reminded me that meaningful change always starts with students and the relationships we build. During my time at 蹤獲扦 I have had the privilege of working with some incredible people across campus that has led to impactful change for current and future shockers.
Why are you proud to be a Shocker?
I'm proud to be a Shocker because we provide opportunities to everyone. 蹤獲扦 meets
students where they are and gives them the tools to grow, succeed, and do things they
didn't think were possible.
What's the greatest piece of advice a colleague or mentor has given you?
The best advice I've ever received is to always say, "It's so nice to see you." It's
simple, genuine, and the perfect way to greet people, especially when you meet a lot
of people and might not always remember if you've met them before. It helps create
connection without awkwardness.
What technological innovations have made the most impact on your life? Explain how
or why.
My iPhone and my Oura ring have probably had the biggest impact on my life. My phone
keeps me connected, organized, and able to do my job from anywhere. My Oura ring helps
me stay on track with sleep, stress management, and recovery it keeps me from burning
out during busy seasons.
What practical skills do you wish you had?

or making small adjustments to my girls' dance costumes. It would definitely save
me time, money, and a lot of rhinestones.

Reading is an essential skill everyone should have. So much more opportunities open
up for you when you take the time to learn and read what is written in books.

up, and don't take themselves too seriously always leave an impression on me.
If you could have a super human power, what would it be?
I would control the weather. I prefer cooler temperatures and love the freshness of
spring. It would be pretty ideal to guarantee perfect weather for events on the Promise
Bridge; sunshine, mild temps, and just enough breeze to keep it comfortable.
If you have one opportunity to travel in time, where would you go and what would you
do?
I think I would go to the future and see where humanity is in the year 3000.
Describe yourself in three words.
Kind. Driven. Strategic.
What is one item on your bucket list?
I'd love to see a ballet at the Palais Garnier in Paris. It's such an iconic space
dramatic, historic, and completely unforgettable. Experiencing that kind of beauty
and talent in a place like that would be magical.
What (or who) inspires you?
I'm inspired by my students and the people who choose to show up for them every day.
I've been incredibly fortunate to have mentors, colleagues, and friends who believed
in me, challenged me, and supported me in moments when I needed it most. That's what
motivates me to do this work creating space, building opportunities, and paying it
forward for the next generation of leaders. Making a difference doesn't always mean
doing something big. Sometimes it's simply doing what's right when no one is watching.

Who would you choose to play you in the movie adaptation of your life?

What do you think is your most significant contribution, accomplishment or achievement
at 蹤獲扦?
Showing up fully everyday for my students and my colleagues. I do not do this for
myself, and I cannot do this by myself. If that was the case, I am not sure if I would
still be here. I have a life outside of my work, I have a lot of responsibilities
at work, and as a social worker educator, it is important that I live my life in a
way that allows my students to see that as your instructor or director, life don't
get no easier, but you are responsible for your choices and how you show that impact
your life.
What's the greatest piece of advice a colleague or mentor has given you?
I am not sure if this was spoken to me, but Dr. Marche invited me to her office and
gave me the rundown of life and opportunities at 蹤獲扦. I appreciated that
moment because she took the time to get to know a new employee who had NO IDEA of
what she had signed up for but was willing to help me become acclimated to this new
world. What that moment instilled in me is to take the time妃ake the time to help
the next one coming into this arena.

John Hammond, Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
What do you think is your most significant contribution, accomplishment or achievement
at 蹤獲扦?
My most significant contribution is that I am a math teacher. I do a lot of other
things at 蹤獲扦, but teacher is my identity. My proudest achievement is winning the
Academy of Effective Teaching Award in 2023 and that my dad was able to be there with
me. He won a similar teaching award, and so a little like-father-like-son moment was
great!
Why are you proud to be a Shocker?
I'm proud of our people. I came here for 9 months, expecting this to be a temporary
job while I looked for others. I came to genuinely love what I teach and enjoy the
students I have. I have great colleagues from the department to across the university.
We care about each other, and that's important.
I'll admit, though, that it wasn't until about year two that I learned "Shocker" referred to wheat. I truly just assumed WuShock had badly drawn lightning coming off his head. 仄
What's the greatest piece of advice a colleague or mentor has given you?
I'm going to get the exact advice mixed up, but channeling my dear friend, the late
Sandy Peer, "Love your students," although we don't always have to like them. Treat

him.

Leonard
Wayne Carlisle Distinguished Service Award
Christopher Leonard, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Affairs
What do you think is your most significant contribution, accomplishment or achievement
at 蹤獲扦?
I'm proud to have expanded applied learning within CAPS to record levels both in
terms of student involvement and cross-campus partnerships. I led efforts to secure
funding to ensure all applied learning trainees at CAPS received compensation, which
reflects our commitment to equity and valuing their contributions. I also initiated
an annual recognition event for applied learning, developed a sustainable funding
model, and expanded training opportunities to include students from bachelor's and
master's level social work programs, professional counseling, master's in psychology,
and doctoral psychology programs. I am honored to be involved at the state level in
helping decrease challenges to licensure for mental health professionals. Supervising
around 40 mental health trainees and seeing their impact on 蹤獲扦 students, the greater
Wichita community, and beyond is one of the greatest joys I have experienced from
my time at CAPS.
I've also fostered strong and meaningful partnerships across campus including with ISLE, Social Work, Athletics, the Psychology Department, CARE Team, and Student Affairs which have been critical to our collective success.
I am proud that the students we serve at CAPS closely reflect the broader student enrolled at 蹤獲扦. I'm also proud of the intake and capacity model developed at CAPS, which has successfully reduced our average routine intake wait time to under five business days. I'm thrilled that three out of four clients who express concerns about failing one or more classes report being more likely to continue at 蹤獲扦 as a result of the support they receive from CAPS. I believe this impact is driven by our commitment to treating students in-house rather than referring them out, and by consistently training our staff to deliver exceptional care.
Another accomplishment I'm proud of was leading the development and quality assurance of CAPS' telehealth services during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We ensured continuity of care for students without interruption, a significant achievement under unprecedented circumstances. Finally, one of my greatest passions is my work with Suspenders4Hope, a suicide prevention initiative that's reached over 8,000 individuals across the U.S. since 2015. I've had the privilege of serving on the planning committee for the 5K & 1 Mile Memorial Walk, and organizing the 2024 and 2025 Black Out Mental Health Stigma men's basketball games in partnership with Ascension Via Christi and 蹤獲扦 Athletics.
Why are you proud to be a Shocker?
The students: Our students consistently demonstrate resilience and determination, overcoming adversity
and continuing forward with strength. Being a part of their journey is a deep honor.
The university: I've seen a genuine commitment from leadership to prioritize student mental health, well-being, and success. 蹤獲扦 continues to invest in the whole student, which makes me proud to contribute to a culture of care.
The community: There's an unspoken bond among Shockers it's something special to feel that connection just by wearing the letters or colors. It's a reminder that you're part of something greater than yourself.
My family: My wife is a proud 蹤獲扦 alum, and our family regularly enjoys 蹤獲扦's cultural, athletic, and student events. Some of my fondest memories are hearing my kids, when they were young, exclaim, "Look, Daddy's work!" every time they saw WuShock or the 蹤獲扦 logo in Wichita or on television. I still hear it in my head today.
