As a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Design & Technical Theatre at 萝莉社, Lena Castro has stepped into a leadership role that combines both technical expertise and mentorship. Lena鈥檚 applied learning experience as the head electrician and student lighting supervisor has been instrumental in shaping their skills and career aspirations.
Lena鈥檚 role is pivotal in transforming design concepts into fully realized stage productions. 鈥淢y job is to interpret plots given to me by designers and put it on stage,鈥 Lena explains. 鈥淭his process includes organizing, hanging, cabling, powering, addressing, programming, and more to make sure that everything is operational on the day of the show.鈥 Beyond their own technical responsibilities, Lena also oversees and teaches students who complete hands-on lab hours as part of their practicum. 鈥淪ince we are a department of two people, practicum students really help with the many-hands-make-light-work aspect to get shows done in a timely manner.鈥
This applied learning opportunity has significantly contributed to Lena鈥檚 professional development. 鈥淭his has helped me grow my leadership skills in the sense of being the first person of contact in order to address an issue,鈥 they share. The fast-paced environment has honed their ability to assess situations quickly and develop effective solutions. 鈥淭hings like open communication with outside sources, teaching and leading a team of people to complete a task, and time management skills have been greatly improved.鈥
In addition to providing valuable work experience, Lena鈥檚 applied learning role has helped them financially. 鈥淭his helps me ensure that I鈥檓 able to keep up with my financial obligations with life such as grocery shopping and rent,鈥 they note. The support from applied learning funds has allowed them to focus on both their studies and their professional growth without undue financial strain.
One of Lena鈥檚 proudest moments came when they used their voice to advocate for long-term improvements in their department. 鈥淚 was able to get the institution to upgrade the lighting equipment for the School of Fine Arts through communicating the issues with the university,鈥 they said. 鈥淚鈥檓 very proud of being able to advocate for the state of my department and major in order to keep up retention and involvement from students in the future.鈥
Lena鈥檚 hands-on experience has reaffirmed their passion for the entertainment industry. 鈥淭his opportunity has solidified that this is something that I want to do with my life,鈥 they affirm. Looking ahead, Lena aspires to make a lasting impact. 鈥淭he entertainment industry has a huge impact on people's lives, and once I become set within my career field, I want to give back and continue to serve my community and underserved communities in fine arts spaces.鈥
For Lena, hands-on experience has been the key to reinforcing their classroom learning. 鈥淚鈥檓 more of a hands-on learner, so this has truly been a beneficial way to absorb information,鈥 they share. 鈥淣ot only is it good practice, but it鈥檚 also really good for a resume.鈥
Looking back on their journey, Lena reflects on how far they鈥檝e come. 鈥淚 had to work to learn as I go, and I had to learn quickly so I could then teach other practicum students as they came in for their hours. This has really put the pedal to the metal on my learning, and I really appreciate the fact that I was able to be given grace to learn as I worked.鈥
Lena Castro鈥檚 applied learning experience at 萝莉社 has been a journey of growth, leadership, and advocacy. Their passion for technical theatre, combined with their dedication to community impact, will undoubtedly light the way for their future success in the entertainment industry.
