Recycling in Kansas

In Kansas, commercial and residential recycling programs are available for a wide variety of materials. From appliances to batteries to paper products to metals, haulers are transporting reusable goods to various reprocessing agents across the state.   

The business of recycling has changed dramatically in recent years due to changes in outlets for recyclable materials and the COVID-19 pandemic.  Understanding the current state of recycling in Kansas will increase the States ability to change, adapt and develop new opportunities.  

Through research and survey analyis of recycling opportunities in Kansas, we gained an overview of the current landscape of recycling and how recycling opportunities can be expanded and enhanced.

Key takeaways. Current Landscape of KS Recycling Recycling in Kansas is primarily driven at the local level through private, public, and non-profit organizations. State laws or regulations do not exist. Rural Recycling Gaps Rural areas have little to no access to recycling opportunities and the distance to larger facilities prohibits growth of recycling programs. New & Emerging Technologies Efficient use of resources, enhanced tracking, sorting, & cleaning, and collaborative approaches to expanding recycling opportunities are seeing positive results in proprietary and pilot programs. Next Steps More in-depth analyses of recycling gaps and community participation in recycling programs can continue to enhance knowledge and innovative solutions for expanding recycling in Kansas.  Community outreach, engagement, and education can help with increasing proper recycling practices and improve understanding of the positive impacts of recycling.

Kansas Recycling Landscape Research

Evaluation of recycling opportunities in Kansas revealed that rural areas of the state have limited to zero access to recycling opportunities.  Transportation and storage are listed as predominant barriers to expanding recycling in rural communities.

New and emerging technologies, evaluating more efficient processes for collecting and transporting recyclable materials, and more in-depth gap analyses can enhance recycling opportunities and participation across the state.

Many report that community outreach and education could reduce the amount of contamination and increase the amount of recyclable materials. Kansas Recycling Resources

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment Bureau of Waste Management (KDHE BWM) provides information regarding the proper and safe disposal of many solid wastes, including hazardous waste.  KDHE BWM also provides outreach and education about solid waste management.

The Kansas Organization of Recyclers (KOR) provides advocacy, information, technical support, networking and educational opportunities in partnership with local, state, regional and national organizations.

Kansas Recycles provides a user-friendly web site to provide the State of Kansas with an easy and comprehensive destination to locate recycling options in all areas of Kansas based on a database and interactive map technology.
